Mandarin Baptist Church Day 3 Update!

After arriving safely to Haiti on Monday morning, we made it to the orphanage and have settled in quite well. Things aren’t at all what we imagined, you really do have to experience it first hand to understand. There are 46 children of all different ages here at the orphanage. The kids are so precious, and so funny!

Monday: After arrival, we spent about 2 hours trying to get from the airport to the orphanage, the road trip was very chaotic yet scenic, and traffic here makes NY look like a stroll in the park. When we arrived, we spent time unpacking and organizing all of our supplies. We brought 18 50lb. military bags with us, full of food, clothes, supplies, shoes etc. After getting settled in we went down stairs to meet and play with the kids. After no sleep for 2 days, we were all a little sleep deprived and decided to call it a night early.

Tuesday: We were all well rested Tuesday morning. After breakfast we delegated some work around the orphanage, the guys were sent downstairs to build some new book shelves for the medical supplies as well as the books and toys for the kids. The ladies stayed upstairs, organized the medical supplies and the kid’s stuff. Gemalli and I were asked to come downstairs and take care of a man with an injured knee, so we cleaned his wound, bandaged him up and gave him some new clothes and shoes. That was a fun experience, apparently we are now doctors :) .  After finishing our early morning activities, we painted all the bookshelves the guys built; played with the kids; had Bible study and dinner; then we all settled in for the night.

It is so easy for us to fill our time with things of leisure and things of this world. In a Bible study we did last night in the book of Job, Eliphaz mentioned to Job that he should set aside all worldly possessions and distractions and allow God to fulfill those spaces and needs. If we choose to do that we will be more satisfied than any worldly possession could make us. The Haitians are great examples for us. They have so little, yet so much. God is their everything, he is their abundant resource of life and they are fulfilled in Him. Our challenge is to set aside the distractions of our daily lives, realize their lack of worth, and open our eyes to see how we can be fulfilled in Christ alone.

More to come later this week…

Overall, good spelling and punctuation, although I did notice a few run-on sentences lol… But seriously, it sounds like God is being magnified down there in Haiti. I wish I was there! – Gen

Who would’ve thought! This will be great hands on training for you, huh? Well, tell everyone we said hello. Be careful and enjoy your time away from the world! Peace and grace!
